Chapter Twenty-Six

Audrey was sitting on the patio reading a book, when Grace arrived. “I got the last table. It’s busy here tonight,” she said. “I ordered you a glass of chardonnay and a margarita for me. I’ve already decided that I’m going to have lasagna.”

Audrey loved Italian food. It didn’t matter if it was the hottest day of the year, that’s often what she ordered. And, Grace noted, Audrey didn’t seem to think that a margarita and lasagna, were in the least incompatible. After a quick peruse of the menu, Grace ordered the salmon filet poached in white wine and herbs.

Grace and Audrey exchanged news of their respective days, with emphasis on the pressures at the probation department where there never seemed to be enough officers and interviews and reports were always more rushed than the officers would like. Grace didn’t miss her days at Barnstable Probation. She was happy with her decision to buy Pearl’s, but it was fun to talk with Audrey about their mutual friends and co-workers and catch up on the latest rumors floating around the courthouse.

Grace, who trusted Audrey explicitly and without reservation, filled her in on everything she knew about the assaults on Michael and Bella, as well as the break- in at Pearl’s, which had left her sprawled on the hood of a car clinging to the windshield wipers, and then, of course, there was the mysterious dragonfly lamp.

“What’s a dragonfly lamp?” Audrey asked.

“I’m not sure. The shape, the base, even the shade, could reference dragonflies. It could be a lot of things. I’m going to have to do some research and see what I can learn.”

“Any thoughts about who might be looking for such a lamp?”

“At first I thought it might be some kind of deranged, confused collector,” Grace said. But, now I don’t think such a person would be so consistent in what they are looking for. But I am frightened. Whoever it is, they are desperate to find it and fast.” Their entrees arrived, and she stared longingly at Audrey’s lasagna.

“You always do this, Grace. Why not order the lasagna yourself?” she said, cutting off a piece and putting it on Grace’s plate. After all, you’re half Italian.”

“The other half is Irish, and I’m in the mood for fish.” Grace took another sip of her wine, savoring the buttery essence.

“I’ve made a new friend at the Asian Art history class I’m taking at the Community College,” Audrey said. “I’m learning more about my ancestors every day. Anyway, her name is Julia Seymoor. I thought I’d ask her to join us on a run. She’s from California, too.”

“Is she married to Roone Seymoor?”

“Yes. How did you know?”

“He showed up at the murder scene the other day, shortly after we found Ben’s body. And then I saw Roone and Julia at the wake, and today Roone came by Pearl’s and purchased a Chinese jade lamp.” Grace leaned forward in her chair. “Is that an odd coincidence, or am I imaging things?”

“I don’t
